Those that make a living from trading stocks are known as traders. They might also be termed investors. One can also sell a stock short and make money. After research on companies that are believed to be in decline, they can be sold short. This is borrowing stocks that you do not own and selling them. When the time that the stocks must be returned arrives, by then hopefully, the stock price has dropped. This means you sold high and bought the stock back to return it at a lower price. The difference is your profit.

It is a full time job. Research into the company's financial situation must be done diligently. You should be able to read a balance sheet and immediately see the company's financial standing. Many people earn a living this way and it is not gambling if you know what you are doing.
